Saute onion and meat and add spices towards the end so they go in the hot stuff. You can use chili powder or hot peppers. Fennel is nice. Oregano is optional. Regular pepper. Check later if it needs salt as the tomato stuff brings in salt. Then add tomato paste and water. If you don’t have that add canned tomatoes and their liquid. We add grated carrots at this point. Cook it down to sloppy!
